”My name is Joe
I am a clinical psychologist. Understanding why men struggle to express themselves has always perplexed me. I’ve always felt as if talking to someone reduces stress and opens my mind to the new possibilities ahead.
In 2019 I completed my research into men’s mental health - and the challenges young men face in asking for support.
I heard heartbreaking stories of how our culture has taught men to hold on to their challenges. In other words - that by keeping secrets and hiding how we feel we are somehow stronger than someone that can face up to their difficulties and disclose them honestly.
Doesn’t make any sense to me?
I hope that mental health coming into the spotlight more and more normalises help-seeking. We are social beings - we need each other.”
